This weekend may not have turned out so well for fans of Stephenie Meyer as the adaptation of her sci-fi novel The Host debuted at #6 in the box office. However, nostalgia and big action had no problem raking in the cash as the delayed G.I. Joe: Retaliation took the top spot with an estimated $41.2 million. There's no telling whether the 3D Conversion will result in a higher box office, but Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis, Adrianne Palicki, a little bit of Channing Tatum and some familiar characters from the G.I. Joe universe still got audiences into the theaters, and Variety says that means another sequel is in the works.
It's a shame the film wasn't really reworked to keep Tatum around, because his death was a bit of a bummer, especially after how well he worked with Johnson in both action and comedy. Though, since the universe that this film exists in is so ridiculous, there's always a chance that he could be brought back to life somehow. Either way, the film has still snagged $132 million worldwide, and that's more than a success for an opening weekend, and it topped the first film worldwide as well.
Since Hasbro and Paramount Pictures are just started development, we're not sure where a third film will go (though Destro will likely step up to bat as a villain this time), but you can be sure that the film will be 3D from the beginning, and maybe even shot natively in the format. At this point, I'm not sure whether or not I would like to see director Jon M. Chu return. He delivered some decent action, but there were some aspects of the film that were kind of sloppy, and maybe someone should take a shot. Thoughts?
